FLAVIOLA

FLAVIOLA, a three-year pan-European research project from 2010 - 2013, was carried out by a consortium of eight national partners from government, academia and industry each with a specific area of expertise. Through cutting-edge research, FLAVIOLA's aim was to drive the development of innovative and natural food products that will have a far-reaching impact on the general public, consumers, scientists, and physicians, as well as European institutions and the food industry. Funded through a grant from the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission, the project was completed in February 2013. For more information, visit FLAVIOLA.org.

Key outcomes of FLAVIOLA include:

  • Development of optimized cocoa flavanol-containing food product prototype.
  • Creation of dedicated analytical platforms.
  • Elucidation of flavanol ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion).
  • Assessment of habitual dietary intake of cocoa flavanols and procyanidins in EU.
  • Demonstration of cocoa flavanol-mediated cardiovascular health benefits in clinical dietary intervention studies:
    • Longer-term effect in healthy individuals.
    • Assessment of age-dependent cocoa flavanol efficacy.
    • Evaluation of applicability to general population.
  • Novel insights into potential mechanisms of action.
